Firefighters with Invalid Licenses
19 of Detroit’s 850 firefighters have invalid licenses. This was sparked by a 7 action
news investigation that revealed that the city doesn’t monitor the driving records of its
employees who routinely drive vehicles. Effective immediately, those 19 workers can’t return
to work until they receive a valid driver’s license. They only have 30 days to get a valid license
and will be subject to discipline if they fail to do so. Records obtained through the secretary of
state confirm that at least 3 drivers have dangerous driving histories. One sergeant's license was
revoked back in 2010 after being cited twice for drinking and driving. Another can't drive until
2015 after being citing twice for driving while intoxicated. A third firefighter hasn't had a valid
license in more than four years since being caught twice for drinking and driving as well as child
endangerment.

Outrageous Question Asked in Class
The parents of Kaya James in Novi Michigan was shocked by a essay question they were asked in class by their teacher. “He asked us whether we wanted to be a slave or factory worker”. The majority of the class wanted to be slaves including some African American students. The 8th grader could not believe it. "I was disappointed because what slaves went through is really humongous and for them to say they would rather be a slave is really disappointing," said Kaya. The students were asked to write an essay on their choice. "I just don't think they are being taught slavery in its entirety," said Kaya's mother, Tina James. "If you fully understood the psychological aspects of being a slave you would never choose it." Kaya wants to be an attorney one day and is really glad she spoke up and made a difference in history.

Detroit Father Collects Wood for his Family
He once found work as a butcher and and a commercial roofer, but at the moment he strolls down the streets of Detroit’s east side trying to help his family of four survive. 53 year old Don strips wood from abandoned houses and brings it home to dispense the only source of light and heat he can afford (fire).
“The same fire that keeps us warm, feeds us” Don says. The family heats the water in a bucket to clean the pots and pans themselves too.
Don lost his job and he now contributes plasma twice a week.
“It takes like half of a day to find the wood, bring it home, and it takes a another half of day to initially cut the wood up and then create a fire” He tells Fox 2’s Andrea isom.
The youngest child of the family is 10 years old. Don says his children are doing exceptionally well in school despite how they’re living right now.
If you would like to make a donation to Don and his family you can do so at the account set up on GiveForward.com. The account’s goal was to raise about $6,000 for the family. That amount was raised in 90 minutes.

Detroit Mother Praised
A Detroit mother is being praised for saving her young children and several other people during a house fire. She woke up to heavy smoke, the sound of smoke alarms, and the screaming of other people living in the house at around 4:00 A.M on Thursday. She rapidly takes her 4 year old and 8 month old children and knocked on the neighbors door to notify them. The woman did not want her face shown during the filming of the news. The man who helped pull out the other residents thanked her and said “Everybody would’ve died if it wasn’t for her”. A few people had minor injuries but are going to be okay. She will be remembered and thanked for her brave behavior.

Snow
The state police says this weekend alone there have been 70 spinouts and crashes. Detroit broke a record Saturday having snow at 31.5 in. The previous record was 29.6 , set in January 1978. Of all the cost of salt and vehicle maintenance Detroit is spending more than we should. If the snow continues we would have to borrow money from the summer’s maintenance funds.

One day, Candice Doss, 25 years old, was trying to book a limo for her mother’s through a booking agent she saw on Craigslist, Detroit Limo Party Bus. Mrs. Doss told Fox 2 News that she called the company to get a quote while she was driving, and her phone dropped the call. She then received a text from the number she had called that said, “Why do Black people always just hang up…is it an inherited thing to be rude? or is it because you were slaves for so long?” - signed www.DetroitLimoPartyBus.com at the end of the message.
Mrs. Doss said she had never really experienced racism until she received this horrible message. “It never happened to me, or to somebody that was just close to me, where I could feel what they feel. I feel what everybody feels now, I mean, it’s just like - when is it going to stop?” said Mrs. Doss.
Fox 2 News called the company and they said they would look into the situation and find out who sent the text. Meanwhile, Metro Party Bus and Limousine in Detroit heard about the situation and offered a free limousine to Mrs. Candice Doss for her mother’s birthday party.

Detroit CFO Resigns
Notice the title above, a Detroit official resigns after making racial comments related to Trayvon Martin. Mr. Jim Bonsall, the city’s chief financial officer resigned after asking if he could “shoot someone in a hoodie.”
Treasurer Cheryl Johnson, wrote a letter to Dave Bing and other city officials last week claiming that Jim treated minority women unfairly. In her letter, she states that some of the comments he made were “extremely offensive, hostile and abusive”.
Despite this, Jim is still well respected as an official to people like Kevyn Orr (the emergency manager) saying that “Jim has made great improvements in how the city handles cash and finance operations”.
After the whole dispute, Jim has apologized. “I apologize and am sorry for having offended coworkers during a recent meeting,” he said. “Regardless of the outcome or the internal investigation or whether I keep my job as a result of it, it was never my intention to offend anyone.”
As a result of his resignation, Detroit begins the search for a new chief financial officer.

The emergency manager Kevyn Orr announced the financing earlier this month. The $230 million would be used to fully pay off the debt. While the rest could improve the city and government technology.

Kwame Kilpatrick Sentenced to 28 Years
A federal judge has sentenced former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to 28 years in prison for his role in a public corruption scandal that cost the city millions of dollars and ended to his political career.
U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds gave Mr.Kilpatrick his sentence Thursday afternoon after Kilpatrick apologized to Detroiters, telling a packed gallery, "I really messed up."
Mr.Kilpatrick spoke for nearly 30 minutes saying he "absolutely hated his job" six months after taking office in 2002 and put out in a lack false confidence." He didn't specify and address his crimes but said he respects the jury's verdict”. He was convicted of conspiracy, extortion, bribery and tax crimes.
Prosecutors said Kilpatrick ran a "private profit machine" out of Detroit's City Hall. The government presented evidence to show he got a share of the spoil after ensuring that co-defendant Bobby Ferguson's uncovering of the company was awarded millions of dollars for their work from the water department.
"He created a `pay-to-play' system for the act of city goods and services, which compromised vast parts of the city government, including the water and sewer system, the convention center, the pension system, casino developments and recreation centers.City government essentially became up for grabs for the right price," prosecutors said in a court filing last week.
