F.L.I.C.S. Goes Green!
By Rachel Kirichu & Kasia Rivers
If you hadn’t noticed, there have been some new recycle bins spread throughout the classrooms in the school, so that means it’s time to recycle!
Hosted by Ms. Peebles’ F.L.I.C.S. Science Club “Energy Guardians”, we are going around our school finding ways to save energy and “go green!”
One recent project the Energy Guardians have done is to “refinish” our school’s recycling dumpster by painting it to put forth some effort in helping the planet.
You can help recycle and save energy in our school, too. All you have to do is to put non-contaminated recyclable items (paper, cardboard, or plastic) into the blue recycle bins. Save energy by unplugging unused power cords or chargers. Remember, if we all put some effort into helping the planet, we can make the Earth a better place!

As reported by Ms. Peebles, Firebirds' coach, the girls started off the season strong with a 12-10 win versus Drew Middle School. Since then, the Lady Firebirds have struggled. That is, until this past Saturday. As the girls approach mid-season, they played an important game versus Pulaski. With a rejuvenated spirit, the Lady Firebirds dominated the entire game and were victorious with a score of 16-12.

F.L.I.C.S. Kids "Trippin" with a Purpose
On October 4, 2013, some of the Lower Elementary Students took an adventure to WIARDS Apple Orchard for a day of fun! Sudents picked apples ann pumpkins, rode hay rides, fed the llamas and goats, survived the laberynth, navigated the corn maze, dared to cross "The Vortex", scared their socks off in the Haunted Mine Shaft, and ended the day enjoying cider and doughnuts.
According to Ms. Whittaker, "It was a beautiful sunny day and the fall colors were amazing. It was the perfect pre MEAP activity for the older ones and fun learning experience for the babies!"

F.L.I.C.S. Kids Get Down to the 'Root' & Get Answers!!
Have you ever wondered where plants come from? Well, you don't have to wonder any longer because F.L.I.C.S. 3rd grade students have the answers!
In late September Ms. Kuehneman, F.L.I.C.S. Science teacher, led her 3rd grade students in a learning journey to learn about plant life. The F.L.I.C.S. on Fire news staff (FOF) dropped by Ms. Kuehneman's class to get the inside scoop. Please see below the interview with Ms. Kuehneman, 3rd grade students - Revelle Cross & Rosell Cross and FOF:
FOF: What was the 'Big Idea' of the project?
Ms. K: The students were supposed to get an idea of which fruits held more seeds.
FOF: What do you think the children learned during the experiment?
Ms. K: The children learned where plant life begins, which is with the seed.
FOF: Do you think this project will help the students in the future?
Ms. K: Yes, because it exposed them to different kinds of fruits and seeds, which some have never seen before.
FOF: What fruits did you use in your experiment?
Revelle: Red Pepper; Roselle: Green Pepper.
FOF: What was the best part of your experiment?
Revelle: Touching the 'mushed' up part of the fruit; Rosell: Touching the 'mushed' up part of the fruit.
FOF: What was the main point of what you learned from your experiment?
Roselle & Revelle: We learned that different fruits have different amounts of seeds in them. We also learned which fruit has the most seeds in it.
Keep up the GREAT work F.L.I.C.S. 3rd grade students!!!
